"TFT is an innovative and rapidly effective form of psychotherapy, already in use in a number of NHS Trusts."

”Thought Field Therapy (TFT) is a new technique for the rapid elimination of all types of emotional distress. It works rather like acupuncture by stimulating the body’s energy meridians. No needles are used — instead the patient finger taps on various parts of the body. The results are amazing as emotional problems frequently disappear in minutes." Dr Colin Barron

Thought Field Therapy is growing in reputation for being highly effective for most emotional trauma, phobias, addictions and mental health issues.

In October 2001 Dr. Shkelzen Syla, Chief of Staff with authority over all medical decisions in Kosova, officially adopted TFT as the treatment of choice for those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the region. This followed a 100% successful trial.

Where did Thought Field Therapy come from?

Dr. Roger CallaghanThought Field Therapy (TFT), was developed by Californian clinical psychologist Dr. Roger J. Callahan, as a unique form of meridian therapy. It has now undergone over 31 years of development.  TFT is best described as a natural, non-invasive, drug and chemical free system for the elimination of negative or troubled emotion.

The concept and theory of the “thought field”, the framework in which the causative agents of psychological disturbance exist, was proposed by Dr. Callahan to explain the observations he was making when applying the first successful treatment procedure.  This is a rapid and easily duplicated cure for most phobias. As a clinical psychologist he had been treating a patient using conventional psychotherapeutic methods for eighteen months.  She was called Mary and her fear of water was so great she had to stay in an inner room of her home whenever it rained and could only have a bath in a few centimetres of water. Cognitive and behavioural approaches had succeeded in getting Mary to cope with her phobia to a limited extent so she could at just approach open water but not without intense fear. Mary described this fear as being situated in her stomach.

waterAt that time was studying Applied Kinesiology (AK) techniques. He decided to apply pressure to a treatment point on the stomach meridian, just beneath the orbit of the eye, by finger tapping on that point. Expecting nothing from such a treatment.  Dr. Callahan comments:

“I was totally unprepared for what happened. As I tapped under her eye, Mary said, “It’s gone, my fear of water, it’s gone! I don’t have those awful feelings in my stomach any more.” I suggested that we go down to the swimming pool adjacent to my office to see if this was really true. I expected her to resist as usual, but in fact had to hurry to keep up with her. For the first time in her life, she bent down, put her head close to the water and began splashing it on her face.”

Since that first treatment, using what is now popularly called a 'tapping technique', the empirical evidence obtained from many thousands of successful TFT treatments has established the resolution of most psychological problems and been proven effective on up to 80% of individuals (at the Algorithm level of TFT treatment).

Psychological ReversalDr. Callahan also discovered the significance of the state of psychological reversal (PR), early in the evolution of TFT. Unique to this paradigm, the treatment of psychological reversal (PR) - a literal reversal of meridian polarity - doubled the success rate of treatments!

Through the use of Applied Kinesiology principles and empirical testing, Dr. Callahan was able to produce specific acupuncture point lists, called algorithms, to overcome many emotional & psychological problems.  Algorithms now form the foundation of TFT practice, and most TFT practitioners use these very effectively to help clients using set algorithms.
