A Principle, is a general rule as a guide to action, or a code of conduct. The phrase 'on principle' means a motivation from a (personally) established code of conduct. Like Values and Standards, Principles help us to prioritise our goals and create for ourselves a personal code of conduct. Unlike standards, which are primarily immovable (downwards), principles are not so rigid, and deal with our aspirations. In this sense, they are more akin to the goals we have about the type of person we want to be. Another use of principles, is to use them as not yet fixed standard. For example, when someone decided to refrain from eating meat, it was at first a principle. Then it became a standard, because they decided 'to avoid eating meat - except in a survival situation' [notice the exception to the rule as explained in the Standards article] Self awareness success tool1) Ask yourself - what qualities do I aspire to exemplify? What sort of person do I want to be? List them. Here, we are asking ourselves, 'which personal qualities do I value?' They do not need to be only qualities we see in ourselves, so they may be qualities we see in others that we can aspire to. We would end up with a list, like this example:
Remember, this is not a list of how you are, but a list of the qualities you most value - and therefore what you would most like to be like.
2) Act as if you already possess these qualities in abundance This is not a tool made for you to beat yourself up. If you feel you do NOT have a particular quality (or have the opposite quality) than you now have the opportunity to do something different. If you aspire to have a quality, then this says you do not already possess it. It means you need to do some work on it. It also means that somewhere inside, you have the resources to become more aligned with the quality you wish to portray. You just need to nuture it and reduce the influence of opposing qualities. If it gets too dificult, it may be that self sabotage (at the Neurologic level, or interference that effects the Neurology) that is affecting you. |
